What is SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform)?

SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) is SAP's cloud platform for integration, application development, data and analytics, and AI. It provides managed services, such as SAP Integration Suite, SAP Build and SAP Datasphere, that let organisations extend and connect SAP applications like S/4HANA without modifying their core.

BTP is organised around four broad areas: application development and automation, data and analytics, integration, and artificial intelligence. You consume it through a global account divided into subaccounts, typically one per environment or region, and you enable the services each subaccount needs through entitlements.

For integration teams, BTP matters for two reasons. First, SAP Integration Suite runs on it, alongside supporting services such as the SAP Connectivity service and SAP Cloud Connector for reaching on-premise systems securely. Second, BTP is where clean-core extensions live: when logic does not belong inside S/4HANA, it can be built side-by-side on BTP and connected through released APIs and events.

  • Integration: SAP Integration Suite, including Cloud Integration, API Management and event-driven integration.
  • Extension: SAP Build and the SAP BTP ABAP environment for side-by-side applications.
  • Data: SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud.
  • AI: SAP's business AI services, including Joule.

Treat account structure as a governance decision: separate development, test and production subaccounts make transports and access control far easier. See the S/4HANA Public Cloud integration guide for how BTP and S/4HANA fit together.
